The Magician
The Magician is card 1 of the Major Arcana, the figure of will and skill. Readers traditionally take it as the ability to turn an idea into something real, using the tools already at hand.

- Upright
- willpower, skill, making things happen
- Reversed
- scattered effort, untapped talent, trickery
Upright
Every suit of the deck lies on the table in front of this figure: a cup, a sword, a pentacle and a wand. That is the point. The card is read as having what you need and knowing how to use it, with focus, confidence and a gift for persuasion.
Reversed
Talent without direction is the usual reading of the card upside down: effort spread thin, skills left unused, or a clever manner covering a thin plan. Waite also allowed for trickery, so some readers ask whether someone is performing more than they are doing.
In love and at work
Drawn for love, it is often seen as someone making the first move, or as charm that needs substance behind it. For a career question, readers tend to take it as a sign to act: pitch the idea, start the project, put the skills to work.
In the picture
One hand raises a wand to the sky and the other points to the ground, the old image of "as above, so below". A figure-eight of infinity floats over the head, roses and lilies grow in the foreground, and a snake biting its tail serves as a belt. The Golden Dawn assigned the card to Mercury.
In a Caelumia profile
