The Fool

The Fool is card 0 of the Major Arcana, the figure at the start of every story. Readers traditionally take it as a fresh beginning, spontaneity and a willingness to step into the unknown before the plan is finished.

Upright

A young traveler with everything they own in one small bag is about as free as a person gets. Waite read the card as folly in the old sense: the openness of someone who has not yet learned to be afraid. In a reading it often points to a new start taken on trust, and to the value of curiosity over caution.

Reversed

Turned over, the same freedom can tip into carelessness, or shrink into hesitation. Some readers see a leap that needs more thought; others see a person holding back from one they want to take. The question the card leaves is which of the two is happening.

In love and at work

Readers who draw it about a relationship usually see something new and unguarded, a connection with room to surprise. Asked about work, it is linked with a new venture, a change of field or an idea tried before the details are settled.

In the picture

Pamela Colman Smith painted a youth in a flowered tunic stepping toward the edge of a cliff, a white rose in one hand and a bundle on a staff over the shoulder. A small white dog leaps beside them and a white sun fills the sky. The Golden Dawn gave the card to the element of Air.

In a Caelumia profile

When The Fool comes up upright in a Caelumia reading, it counts toward these themes for that day, alongside the rest of the profile: Adventure, Spontaneity, Restlessness.
