The Hierophant
The Hierophant is card 5 of the Major Arcana, the teacher of an established tradition. Readers traditionally take it as shared belief, learning from others and the institutions that hold a community together.

- Major Arcana
- Card 5
- Golden Dawn
- Taurus
- Upright
- tradition, teaching, shared belief
- Reversed
- questioning the rules, an unconventional path
Upright
Religion is the obvious setting, but readers apply the card to any tradition: a school, a craft, a profession, a family's way of doing things. It is read as learning from those who came before, finding a mentor, or choosing to belong to something larger than yourself.
Reversed
Questioning the rules is the common reading of this card upside down. Some readers see a healthy break from a tradition that no longer fits; others see rebellion without a clear alternative. Either way, the card asks whose rules you are following.
In love and at work
In love it is linked with commitment on conventional terms, such as marriage or a shared faith, and with values two people hold in common. At work readers associate it with teaching, training, mentorship and large organizations.
In the picture
A religious figure in red robes and a triple crown sits between two gray pillars, raising a hand in blessing. Two monks kneel before him and two crossed keys lie at his feet. The Golden Dawn gave the card to Taurus.
