The Lovers
The Lovers is card 6 of the Major Arcana, the card of union and of choice. Readers traditionally take it as love, partnership and the decisions that show what a person truly values.

- Major Arcana
- Card 6
- Golden Dawn
- Gemini
- Upright
- love, union, a choice made by your values
- Reversed
- imbalance, misalignment, a hard choice
Upright
Romance is the first reading most people expect, and the card does carry it: attraction, partnership and a meeting of equals. Waite also stressed choice. Many readers take the card as a decision that matters because it reflects who you are.
Reversed
Imbalance is how most readers take the card reversed: a relationship where one person gives more, values that have drifted apart, or a choice made against your own grain. It can also point to a decision that is hard precisely because both options mean something.
In love and at work
For love, it is one of the warmest cards in the deck, linked with closeness, honesty and a bond both people choose. At work, readers see partnerships, a job that matches your values, or a choice between two paths.
In the picture
A man and a woman stand unclothed in a garden under a great winged angel and a blazing sun. A tree of flames stands behind him, and behind her a fruit tree with a serpent coiled in its branches, after the story of Eden. The Golden Dawn assigned the card to Gemini.
