The Hanged Man
The Hanged Man is card 12 of the Major Arcana, the card of the pause. Readers traditionally take it as surrender, waiting and the new perspective that comes from seeing things upside down.

- Card 12
- Golden Dawn
- Water
- Upright
- pause, surrender, a new point of view
- Reversed
- stalling, indecision, resistance
Upright
Nothing about the figure looks distressed, which surprises people. The face is calm, even content. Readers take the card as a voluntary pause: letting go of control, waiting instead of forcing, and finding that a situation looks different once you stop fighting it.
Reversed
A pause that has turned into stalling is how readers often take the reversed card: indecision, or resistance to a change you know is needed. Some see a sacrifice made for nothing, or a wait that has gone on too long.
In love and at work
For love, the card is linked with patience, or with a relationship that needs a fresh way of looking at it. For work, readers see a project on hold, a need to rethink the approach, or a choice to give something up for a longer aim.
In the picture
A young man hangs by one foot from a living T-shaped tree, his other leg bent behind the knee and his hands behind his back. A golden halo shines around his head. The Golden Dawn assigned the card to the element of Water.
