Nine of Wands
The Nine of Wands is the card of a guarded figure with a bandaged head, leaning on a staff before a row of eight more. Readers traditionally take it as resilience and persistence, and Waite gives it strength in opposition and a readiness for attack.

- Reversed
- exhaustion, defensiveness
Upright
Bandaged but still upright, the figure has clearly been through something. Readers see resilience here: having taken knocks and staying on watch anyway. The card suits the late stage of a long effort, when there is one more push left. It can also describe caution learned the hard way, a guard that stays up because it once had to.
Reversed
Exhaustion and defensiveness color the reversed Nine. Readers see someone too tired to keep watch, or so guarded that every approach looks like an attack. It prompts a question about whether the wall still protects anything or has become the problem.
In love and at work
Past hurt showing up as wariness with a new partner is a common love reading. On the job, readers take it as a long project near the end, a role that has required grit, or a need to rest before the next stretch. It describes stamina, not a promise of reward.
In the picture
A man with a bandage around his head clutches a staff and glances sideways, as if expecting trouble. Behind him eight more staves stand upright in a row like a fence. The ground is green and the sky pale. The Golden Dawn gave this card to the Moon in Sagittarius.
