Eight of Wands
The Eight of Wands is the only card in the suit with no people in it, just eight staves flying through the air. Readers traditionally take it as speed, momentum and swift action, and Waite gives it haste and messages on the way.

Upright
Motion is the whole subject. Readers see things that had been stalled starting to move quickly, with news, messages and decisions coming in close together. It is associated with travel by air, fast replies and plans shifting from talk to action. Waite adds the old phrase about the arrows of love, so readers also link it to feelings that arrive suddenly.
Reversed
Waiting is the usual reversed reading. Readers see delays, messages that do not come and a frustrating stop after a run of fast progress. It can also point to rushing so hard that things scatter, which suggests slowing down to aim.
In love and at work
Sudden attraction, quick texts and a romance that moves fast are the traditional love readings. For careers it suggests a flurry of email, deadlines coming at once, or a project that picks up pace after a slow patch. Readers read the tempo of events, not their ending.
In the picture
Eight wands with small green leaves fly in parallel across a clear sky, angled down as if about to land. Beneath them is open country with a river and a house on a hill. There are no figures at all. The Golden Dawn assigned the card to Mercury in Sagittarius.
