Sagittarius rising

What the rising sign stands for

The rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It marks the start of the first house and sets the layout of the whole chart. Astrologers read it as a person's manner, how they meet the world and how others first see them.

Every sign rises in the course of a day, about one every two hours on average, so the Ascendant needs an accurate birth time and place. The planet that rules the rising sign is called the chart ruler, and many astrologers give it extra weight in reading the whole chart.

How astrologers read it

Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius, becomes the chart ruler. People with this rising sign often seem cheerful and easygoing, with a frank way of speaking and an appetite for new experiences.

They tend to be drawn to travel, learning and big questions. Many are described as natural teachers or storytellers. Astrologers also link this rising sign with a love of the outdoors, animals and anywhere that offers a long view.

In relationships

Gemini sits opposite a Sagittarius Ascendant, on the seventh house cusp, and astrologers read that as an attraction to clever, talkative partners who keep things interesting.

Strengths and shadows

Enthusiasm and good humor make them easy to like. They may also seem blunt or restless, promise more than they can deliver, or leave when things get heavy.

In a Caelumia profile

Caelumia reads Sagittarius rising toward these themes, then weighs them with the rest of a chart and numbers before anything is shown: Seeking, Adventure, Restlessness, Idealism, Independence.
