Scorpio rising
Scorpio rising is associated with an intense, private and magnetic presence. Astrologers read it as someone who watches closely and reveals little at first, with Mars, and for modern astrologers Pluto, as chart ruler.
What the rising sign stands for
The rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It marks the start of the first house and sets the layout of the whole chart. Astrologers read it as a person's manner, how they meet the world and how others first see them.
Every sign rises in the course of a day, about one every two hours on average, so the Ascendant needs an accurate birth time and place. The planet that rules the rising sign is called the chart ruler, and many astrologers give it extra weight in reading the whole chart.
How astrologers read it
With Scorpio on the Ascendant, Mars rules the chart in the traditional scheme, and many modern astrologers also look to Pluto. People with this rising sign often give an impression of depth and control, and others may find them hard to read.
They tend to be perceptive about people and cautious about trust. Once they let someone in, they are usually loyal for good.
In relationships
Opposite Scorpio rising, on the seventh house cusp, sits Taurus. Astrologers read that as a need for a calm, loyal partner who offers steadiness.
Strengths and shadows
The first impression is often strength and quiet confidence. The same reserve can come across as secretive or intimidating, and it may take others time to see their warmth.
