Sagittarius
Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign ruled by Jupiter. Astrologers associate it with exploration, belief and freedom, and with a search for meaning that tends to go a long way from home.

In the tradition
Sagittarius closes the autumn and is another of Ptolemy's double-bodied signs. The archer of the image is a centaur, half human and half horse. It is sometimes identified with Chiron, the teacher of Greek heroes, though Greek writers also named the satyr Crotus. The center of our galaxy lies in the direction of these stars.
In the sky the archer's arrow points toward Antares, the bright star at the heart of the neighboring Scorpion, and astrologers have long taken the drawn bow as a picture of aim and purpose.
Ptolemy gives Sagittarius to Jupiter. The traditional scheme gives it no exaltation. Medieval authors assigned it the hips and thighs, and it has long been linked with horses, travel and distant places.
Strengths and shadows
Sagittarius shows itself through optimism and candor. It is curious about other cultures and ideas, generous with its enthusiasm, and good at seeing the larger picture.
The shadow is restlessness and overstatement. Sagittarius can promise more than it can deliver, preach instead of listen, or leave when commitment starts to feel like a fence.
In a birth chart
Sagittarius lends the planets in it breadth and conviction. Jupiter is at home here. Mercury is in detriment, which older authors read as detail giving way to the big idea.
Its modern house is the ninth: philosophy, religion, higher learning, law and travel far from home.
