Leo
Leo is a fixed fire sign ruled by the Sun. Astrologers associate it with warmth, generosity and self-expression, and with a wish to be seen for what one creates.

In the tradition
Leo covers the height of the northern summer, and its traditional character follows the season: hot, bright and settled. The lion is usually the Nemean lion, the first of the labors of Heracles.
Leo is the only sign ruled by the Sun, and Ptolemy pairs it with Cancer as the houses of the two lights. The traditional scheme gives it no exaltation. Astrologers from antiquity on assigned it the heart and the back, and its brightest star, Regulus, was called the heart of the lion.
Strengths and shadows
Leo brings a big heart and a natural sense of occasion. It is loyal, playful and generous with praise, and it tends to bring out the confidence of the people around it.
Its shadow is the need for an audience. Leo can take criticism as a personal wound, hold on to pride after it stops serving anyone, or fill a room without noticing who else is in it.
At its best, Leo's pride is the pride of someone who does good work and wants the people around them to feel the same about theirs.
In a birth chart
Leo gives the planets in it an open, confident way of showing themselves. The Sun is at home here. Saturn is in detriment, and its restraint sits awkwardly in a sign that wants to shine.
Leo corresponds to the fifth house in the modern scheme: creativity, romance, play and children.
