Leo rising

What the rising sign stands for

The rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It marks the start of the first house and sets the layout of the whole chart. Astrologers read it as a person's manner, how they meet the world and how others first see them.

Every sign rises in the course of a day, about one every two hours on average, so the Ascendant needs an accurate birth time and place. The planet that rules the rising sign is called the chart ruler, and many astrologers give it extra weight in reading the whole chart.

How astrologers read it

With Leo on the Ascendant, the Sun rules the chart, so the Sun sign takes on extra importance. People with this rising sign often have a natural sense of occasion and a manner that draws attention, whether or not they want it.

They tend to be generous and encouraging in company, and many care a great deal about how they present themselves. Traditional authors linked this rising sign with a strong, upright bearing, and modern astrologers often mention a memorable head of hair.

In relationships

Aquarius falls on the seventh house cusp for Leo rising, and astrologers read that as an attraction to independent, unusual partners who don't simply admire it.

Strengths and shadows

Warmth, confidence and generosity make the first impression. They may also seem proud or attention-seeking, and they can be sensitive to being ignored.

In a Caelumia profile

Caelumia reads Leo rising toward these themes, then weighs them with the rest of a chart and numbers before anything is shown: Self-expression, Play, Leadership, Openness.
