Capricorn rising

What the rising sign stands for

The rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It marks the start of the first house and sets the layout of the whole chart. Astrologers read it as a person's manner, how they meet the world and how others first see them.

Every sign rises in the course of a day, about one every two hours on average, so the Ascendant needs an accurate birth time and place. The planet that rules the rising sign is called the chart ruler, and many astrologers give it extra weight in reading the whole chart.

How astrologers read it

Saturn is the chart ruler for Capricorn rising. People with this rising sign often seem older than their years when young, and many are described as seeming younger as they age.

They tend to approach new situations with caution and a sense of purpose. They are often seen as the responsible one in a group. Astrologers often note a dry wit that only shows once they feel at ease, and a strong respect for tradition and hard-won experience.

In relationships

With Capricorn rising, Cancer sits on the cusp of the seventh house. Astrologers often read that as a wish for a warm, nurturing partner behind its composed public face.

Strengths and shadows

Competence and self-control are what others see first. They can also seem reserved, cold or overly formal, and they may hide how much they care.

In a Caelumia profile

Caelumia reads Capricorn rising toward these themes, then weighs them with the rest of a chart and numbers before anything is shown: Ambition, Discipline, Caution, Stability.
