In the tradition

Capricorn begins at the winter solstice, the shortest day in the northern year, when the Sun turns back north. The Tropic of Capricorn is named for it. Its image is a sea-goat, half goat and half fish, a figure that goes back to Mesopotamian sky lore.

In Ptolemy's scheme Capricorn belongs to Saturn and is the exaltation of Mars, a pairing of endurance and drive. The Moon is in detriment here and Jupiter is in fall. Traditional authors assigned the sign the knees.

Strengths and shadows

Reliability and long-range ambition are Capricorn's strengths. It takes responsibility seriously, respects experience, and is willing to climb slowly toward a goal that matters to it.

The shadow is coldness and overwork. Capricorn can put status ahead of feeling, carry more than its share without complaint, or judge itself and others by results alone.

A common saying among astrologers is that Capricorn grows younger with age, loosening up once the early work of proving itself is done.

In a birth chart

Caution, structure and an eye on the future mark any planet placed in Capricorn. Saturn is at home here and Mars is exalted. The Moon is in detriment and Jupiter is in fall: comfort and easy optimism are considered harder to reach in a sign built for effort.

Capricorn corresponds to the tenth house in the modern scheme: career, reputation, public standing and authority.
