Virgo
Virgo is a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury. Astrologers associate it with care for detail, usefulness and craft, and with a steady wish to make things work better.

In the tradition
Virgo falls at the harvest, and the maiden of the image usually holds an ear of wheat. Its brightest star, Spica, takes its name from the Latin for that ear of grain. Greek writers linked the maiden to Astraea, the goddess of justice who was the last of the immortals to leave the earth.
The harvest also made Virgo a sign of sorting, of separating grain from chaff, and later writers turned that into a picture of discernment and judgment.
Virgo is unusual in the traditional scheme because Mercury both rules it and is exalted in it. Ptolemy calls it a double-bodied sign, sitting between summer and autumn. Lilly and his predecessors assigned it the belly and intestines.
Strengths and shadows
Competence and quiet service are Virgo's hallmarks. It notices what others miss, likes a job done properly, and shows care through practical help more than grand gestures.
The shadow is perfectionism. Virgo can criticize itself harder than anyone else would, worry over small things, or hold back until something is exactly right.
In a birth chart
In Virgo, planets turn to analysis, method and refinement. Mercury is both at home and exalted here. Jupiter is in detriment and Venus is in fall, which older authors read as generosity and pleasure narrowed by a critical eye.
The sixth house, of daily work, routines, health habits and service, is Virgo's in the modern scheme.
