Sun in Aquarius

The Sun in Aquarius is associated with independence, originality and a concern for the wider world. Traditional astrology counts the Sun as in detriment here, and modern astrologers read that as a self that stands for the group rather than above it.

What the Sun stands for

In a birth chart the Sun is the center of the self: will, vitality and the sense of purpose a person grows into. Ancient astrologers counted it as one of the two lights, with the Moon, and read it for life force and standing in the world.

Modern astrology puts the Sun sign first because it is the one placement anyone can work out from a birthday. That popularity began with Alan Leo around 1900 and the newspaper horoscope columns of the 1930s. The Sun is still only one part of a chart, and it reads best alongside the Moon and the rising sign.

How astrologers read it

Aquarius sits opposite Leo, the Sun's own sign, so the Sun is in detriment here. Older authors read that as a weaker Sun. Modern writers tend to see personal pride give way to principles and ideals, and a person who wants to be one of many and still a little different.

An Aquarius Sun is often described as friendly but hard to know well. It values freedom, tends to question convention, and is at its best working for a cause it believes in.

In relationships

An Aquarius Sun in love is often said to want a partner who is also a friend and an equal. It values independence on both sides and can seem cool until trust is established.

Strengths and shadows

The gifts are fairness, inventiveness and loyalty to friends. The difficulties are emotional distance, stubbornness about ideas, and a habit of caring about people in general more easily than the person nearby.
