Life Path 9

Life Path 9 is the number of compassion and completion. Numerologists associate it with idealism, generosity and a broad view of the world, and with a life that is about serving something larger than oneself.

What a Life Path number is

The Life Path is the number numerologists draw from a full date of birth, and most of them treat it as the most important number in a chart. It is read as the general direction of a life: the qualities a person grows into and the lessons that keep coming back.

The system is usually called Pythagorean, after the Greek philosopher who taught that numbers underlie everything. The method itself is modern. It took shape in the United States in the early 20th century, in books such as L. Dow Balliett's The Philosophy of Numbers (1908), and was standardized by later writers including Juno Jordan.

Caelumia reduces the month, the day and the year of birth separately, then adds the three and reduces again. The master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept whole wherever they appear. Other numerologists add the digits in a different order, which can give a different result for the same date, so it is worth knowing which method a reading uses.

An example

Someone born on June 8, 1993 has Life Path 9:

  1. Month: 6
  2. Day: 8
  3. Year: 1993: 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 22 (a master number, kept whole)
  4. Total: 6 + 8 + 22 = 36, then 3 + 6 = 9

What it means

Nine is the last of the single digits, and numerologists read it as the number of endings and of everything that came before it. A Life Path 9 is usually described as humane, open-minded and artistic, someone moved by other people's struggles.

Nines are asked to let go: of old hurts, of relationships that have run their course, and of the wish for life to be fair on its own schedule.

Strengths and shadows

At its best, Life Path 9 is wise, tolerant and giving. People with this number are often drawn to causes, the arts, or any work that helps others.

The shadow side is martyrdom and disappointment. A 9 can give too much, expect too much of the world, or hold on to the past. Because it sees the whole picture, it can also struggle with the small practical steps that make a vision real.

In love and work

In relationships, a 9 is warm and forgiving, and it looks for a partner who shares its values. At work it does well in teaching, healing, the arts or public service.
