The hand from a cloud

On all four Aces a hand comes out of a cloud holding the suit’s sign. It is an old Christian way of showing the hand of God.

In the tradition

Early Christian art did not picture God the Father, but showed his hand reaching from a cloud, often in the act of blessing. The device survived in heraldry and in printed emblems, and the Aces of earlier decks already use it.

Waite’s descriptions start each Ace with the hand issuing from a cloud. The Golden Dawn called the Aces the roots of their elements, so the hand offers the element itself.
