The dog and the wolf
A dog and a wolf bay at the Moon from either side of a path. Waite calls them the fears of the natural mind, where only reflected light shows the way.

In the tradition
The Marseille Moon already had two dogs baying. Behind them stands Hecate, the Greek goddess of night and crossroads, whose coming was announced by howling hounds.
Waite pairs a tame animal with a wild one. Between them the path runs off between two towers, which he calls the way out into the unknown.
