Sun in Cancer
The Sun in Cancer is associated with a caring, protective and emotionally deep character. Astrologers read it as someone whose sense of self is tied to home, family and the people they look after.
What the Sun stands for
In a birth chart the Sun is the center of the self: will, vitality and the sense of purpose a person grows into. Ancient astrologers counted it as one of the two lights, with the Moon, and read it for life force and standing in the world.
Modern astrology puts the Sun sign first because it is the one placement anyone can work out from a birthday. That popularity began with Alan Leo around 1900 and the newspaper horoscope columns of the 1930s. The Sun is still only one part of a chart, and it reads best alongside the Moon and the rising sign.
How astrologers read it
Cancer is ruled by the Moon, so a Cancer Sun is often described as the most lunar of the Sun signs: moody in the old sense of the word, sensitive to atmosphere and guided by feeling. Home matters a great deal, whether that means a place, a family or a small circle of trusted friends.
Astrologers often point to a strong memory with this placement. A Cancer Sun keeps things, from photographs to promises, and it tends to stay loyal long after others have moved on.
In relationships
In love, a Cancer Sun is usually read as devoted and protective. It wants a home life that feels safe, and it may need reassurance before it lets its guard down.
Strengths and shadows
The gifts are warmth, intuition and a real talent for making others feel safe. The difficulties are defensiveness, holding grudges, and caring for everyone else first.
