Sun in Aries
The Sun in Aries is associated with a bold, self-starting nature. Traditional astrology counts it as exalted here, one of the strongest places for the Sun, and modern astrologers read it as a person who wants to lead and act on instinct.
What the Sun stands for
In a birth chart the Sun is the center of the self: will, vitality and the sense of purpose a person grows into. Ancient astrologers counted it as one of the two lights, with the Moon, and read it for life force and standing in the world.
Modern astrology puts the Sun sign first because it is the one placement anyone can work out from a birthday. That popularity began with Alan Leo around 1900 and the newspaper horoscope columns of the 1930s. The Sun is still only one part of a chart, and it reads best alongside the Moon and the rising sign.
How astrologers read it
Ptolemy places the exaltation of the Sun in Aries, where it sits at the spring equinox as the days grow longer. Older authors took that as the Sun at its most vigorous, and modern writers still read an Aries Sun as someone with energy to spare and a strong sense of self.
People with this placement are often described as competitive in a good-natured way. They like to be first, they say what they think, and they tend to learn by doing rather than by planning.
In relationships
In love, an Aries Sun is usually read as open about its interest and eager to act on it. It tends to enjoy a little challenge in a partner and to lose interest when things settle into routine too early.
Strengths and shadows
The gifts are courage and honesty. The difficulties are impatience and a short fuse, and a tendency to lose interest once the challenge is gone.
